Export a ChatGPT conversation to PDF
ChatGPT has no “Download as PDF” button. You can still get a good PDF of a single conversation – the trick is to avoid the cut-off code blocks and empty pages that the normal print dialog often produces.
Option 1: Print the page (free, quick, often messy)
- Open the conversation and scroll to the top so that all messages are loaded.
- Press Ctrl+P (⌘+P on Mac).
- Choose Save as PDF as the destination.
The page is built for the screen, not for paper, so you may get the sidebar, wide code blocks that are cut off at the right edge, or only the part of the chat that was visible. If that happens, use option 3.
Option 2: The official data export (all chats, not a PDF)
In ChatGPT open Settings → Data controls → Export data. You get an e-mail with a link to a .zip; OpenAI says it can take up to 7 days and that the link expires 24 hours after it arrives. The .zip contains conversations.json (large exports use numbered files). That is a complete backup, but not a readable document – see how to read the ChatGPT data export.
Option 3: One click with Talkmere
- Install Talkmere and open the conversation.
- Click the Talkmere icon and choose PDF (Pro).
- A clean print view opens: code blocks wrap instead of being cut off, tables fit the page, each message is labelled. Choose Save as PDF.
Because the PDF is made by your own browser's print engine, every language and script prints correctly – Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese, emoji. Prefer an editable file? Use Word (DOCX) or the free Markdown export.
Talkmere saves the open conversation from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Grok as Markdown, HTML or JSON for free, and as PDF or Word with Pro. It runs in your browser – nothing is uploaded.
Questions
Does ChatGPT have a built-in PDF export?
Not for a single conversation at the time of writing. You can print the page or request the full data export.
Why are my code blocks cut off in the PDF?
The chat page keeps long code lines on one line with a horizontal scrollbar; the printer can't scroll, so the end of the line is lost. Talkmere's print view wraps long lines.
Can I get one PDF for many chats?
Yes, with Pro: import your data export on the Talkmere collection page, tick the chats and choose “Selected → PDF”. Each chat starts on a new page.
