Open and read the ChatGPT data export

ChatGPT's data export is the only way to download your whole history at once. The .zip is not very readable, though: the conversations are in one large JSON file, stored as a tree of message branches.

Request the export

Settings → Data controls → Export data → Confirm export. When it's ready you get an e-mail (OpenAI says it can take up to 7 days); the download link expires 24 hours after it arrives, and you must be signed in to the same account. Self-service export is not available in Business and Enterprise workspaces.

What's inside

  • conversations.json – all chats (very large exports may be split into numbered files).
  • chat.html – a viewer page; in recent exports the content is embedded as JSON, so it can be slow to open.
  • Images and files you uploaded, plus account metadata.

Each conversation has a mapping of messages linked by parent/children. When you edited a prompt or regenerated an answer, both versions are in the tree; current_node points to the branch you saw last.

Turn it into files (offline)

  1. Click the Talkmere icon → Collection & import a data export.
  2. Choose the .zip (or conversations.json). It is read in your browser – nothing is uploaded.
  3. Search by title or text. Save any single chat as Markdown, HTML or JSON for free, or tick many and export them as one .zip in Markdown, HTML, JSON or Word (Pro).

Questions

Can I re-import the export into ChatGPT?

Not as chats. OpenAI's help says you can upload the JSON to a new chat as reference, but it doesn't recreate your old conversations.

Does the export include deleted chats?

No. OpenAI notes that an export can't restore chats that were already deleted.

Is my export uploaded anywhere by Talkmere?

No. The collection page runs inside the extension; the file never leaves your computer.
