Organize ChatGPT chats into folders
After a few months, the ChatGPT sidebar is a long list of titles. ChatGPT has a few built-in tools to tidy it up; if you want plain folders and subfolders, an extension adds them.
What ChatGPT has built in
- Projects keep related chats together with shared files and instructions. Open Projects in the sidebar, create one, and move chats in with the chat menu → Move to project. Because a project also shares context (and, if you choose, project-only memory), it is meant for ongoing work rather than for filing every chat.
- Pin a chat to keep it near the top.
- Archive finished chats: they leave the sidebar but stay searchable (Settings → Archived chats).
- Rename chats so the title says what came out of them.
OpenAI notes that availability of projects depends on your plan and workspace settings.
Folders and subfolders with Talkmere
- Install Talkmere and open chatgpt.com. A small tab appears at the right edge – click it (or press Alt+Shift+T).
- Click + New folder. Create as many as you need (5 are free).
- Drag a chat from ChatGPT's own sidebar onto a folder. Or open the chat and press Add to folder.
- Drag folders onto each other to nest them, e.g. Work → Clients → Acme. Double-click a name to rename it.
Folders only store a link and the title of each chat, in your browser. They don't move or change anything in your ChatGPT account, so they work next to Projects.
A simple system that lasts
- Use a few top-level folders by area (Work, Study, Personal, Code) and subfolders by client or topic.
- Keep one “Inbox” folder for chats you will sort later.
- Star the single answer you'll need again (bookmarks), instead of keeping the whole chat.
- Save a backup of your folders now and then (Talkmere → More → Save backup).
Talkmere adds folders, search, bookmarks and a prompt library to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok, and saves chats as Markdown, PDF or Word. Free for 5 folders; it runs in your browser – nothing is uploaded.
Questions
Does Talkmere change my ChatGPT account?
No. Folders are stored only in your browser. ChatGPT doesn't see them, and your chats stay where they are.
Do folders sync between computers?
Not automatically – there is no Talkmere server. Save a backup file on one computer and restore it on the other.
Can I use folders for Claude, Gemini and Grok too?
Yes. The same folders appear on all four sites, so one folder can hold chats from different AIs.
