Search old ChatGPT conversations

Updated 2026-11-03

You remember the answer, not the chat it was in. Here is how to find it – first with ChatGPT's own search, then across your whole history and all four AI sites.

ChatGPT's own search

  1. Open Search at the top of the ChatGPT sidebar (on the web: Ctrl+K, ⌘+K on Mac).
  2. Type a word or phrase from the conversation. Results can match titles and messages.
  3. Use the Chats filter if many projects and files show up.

According to OpenAI, archived chats remain searchable, deleted chats don't appear, and locked chats are only found under Projects → Locked chats.

When the built-in search isn't enough

Common reasons: you want to search Claude, Gemini and Grok chats in the same place, you want exact phrases, or you want to land on the message rather than the top of a long chat.

  1. Install Talkmere. Every chat you open from now on is added to a local index in your browser.
  2. For your older history, request the official export (Settings → Data controls → Export data) and import the .zip on Talkmere's library page. It is read on your computer – nothing is uploaded.
  3. Open the Talkmere panel → Search. Use several words, "an exact phrase", or site:claude.
  4. Click a result: the chat opens, scrolls to the matching message and highlights it.

Why Talkmere doesn't crawl your account

Some tools load every chat in the background to build an index. On a big account that takes hours and can trigger ChatGPT's “You're making requests too quickly” message. Talkmere only reads chats you open, plus the export file you choose, so it never sends extra requests to the chat site.

Talkmere adds folders, search, bookmarks and a prompt library to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok, and saves chats as Markdown, PDF or Word. Free for 5 folders; it runs in your browser – nothing is uploaded.
